bakery,
Ben's Cookies Philippines
Had a chance to visit Ben's Cookies Philippines as well as experience rolling some cookie dough in their kitchen. Sharing my experience in this blog post.
Ben’s Cookies started as a stall in Oxford’s Covered Market in 1983. Founded by cookery writer and chocoholic Helge Rubenstein, she named it after her son Ben (that’s him in the logo, drawn by her good friend and renowned illustrator Quentin Blake). Today, Ben's Cookies are now available and known worldwide as delectable, soft-baked cookies, made with chocolate chunks, not chips.
The first branch of Ben's Cookies in the Philippines is located on the ground floor of The Podium in Ortigas. I was lucky enough to meet and talk to Ryan Serrano, the man who brought Ben's Cookies here--bringing home 14 flavors out of the 23 UK flavors. As I talked to him, I learned that all other franchises of Ben's Cookies around the globe are and regularly checked by United Kingdom's (UK) Ben's Cookies connoisseurs to ensure the quality and consistency of their cookies. That being said, Ben's Cookies around the world actually taste exactly the same--including the ones that we have in the Philippines.
The cookie doughs were made in the UK and are exported here blast-frozen. None of the franchisees know the recipe of the cookies. The staff simply rolls the dough and bakes them in the oven. By the way, the calibration of the ovens is also controlled and checked by the UK staff regularly--including the room temperature. I was again lucky enough to experience rolling their cookies. Yay! Thank you, Ben's Cookies Philippines!
"Baking with chunks, not chips."
The cookies are freshly baked every day.
They serve fourteen flavors of cookies and my favorite choice would be this one in the photo--Double Chocolate and Nuts (walnuts). To see the other thirteen flavors, click here. To view the nutritional information of their cookies, click here.
All the other flavors are also good. My other favorite picks would be lemon, orange and milk chocolate, and white chocolate and macadamia. I would suggest buying in assorted flavors.
For the prices, a single cookie costs 90 Php. They also have a promo: buy 5 and get 2 free, or buy 10 and get 5 free. Gift Tins are available for 495 Php (small tin with 4 cookies) and 855 Php (large tin with 8 cookies). They also serve Gelato: choice of dark chocolate, vanilla, matcha, black sesame, cappucino, or strawberry (single scoop for 129 Php and double scoop for 199 Php). You could have the best of both worlds which they call the Cookie Monster: one cookie with your choice of premium gelato (single scoop for 180 Php and double scoop for 240 Php). Brewed Coffee is available for 95 Php.
Enjoying my Ben's Cookies at home with a mug of milk. I love how it is crunchy on the outside yet soft inside. The chocolate chunks also give better experience. Yum! The cookies are best consumed within 4 days at room temperature or a week if refrigerated.
